More than thirty lagoons, developed on sinkholes, some permanent and others temporary, form one of the most unique karstic systems in the Natura 2000 Network and one of the natural sites of greatest geological and ecological value on the Iberian Peninsula.

The botanical, geomorphological, and ecological diversity of the area depends on the balance between the underground aquifer and natural flood cycles. Decades of land transformation have altered that dynamic. The drop in the water table and the loss of part of the original floodplain have increased pressure on priority habitats and species associated with the lagoon complex.

With the aim of reversing this situation, the project LIFE BALLESTEROS will develop between January 2026 and June 2029 a comprehensive restoration action coordinated by the Global Nature Foundation.

The project is co-financed by the European Union's LIFE program, the Diputación de Cuenca, and Redeia, and has the collaboration of the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha and the municipalities of Arcas, Valdetórtola, and Villar de Olalla.

The planned actions begin with the acquisition of agricultural land located in the core of the Ballesteros Lagoon Complex and continue with the decommissioning of drainage and irrigation infrastructure that has altered the hydrological dynamics of the system.

Subsequently, the recovery of the floodplain will help promote aquifer recharge and re-establish natural temporary flooding processes on more than a hundred hectares, contributing to the ecological functioning of the wetland.

The improvement of the water regime will also facilitate the expansion of natural habitats and the recovery of plant communities historically linked to the lagoons, including calcareous fens dominated by *Cladium mariscus* and charophyte communities, both of high ecological interest.

Restoration measures also include revegetation with native species and recovery of riparian forest sections, with the aim of improving the ecological connectivity of the area.

The project also includes agricultural stewardship agreements with local farms to promote conservation-friendly practices and reduce nitrogen and pesticide use by up to 25% in areas near the lagoon complex.

The entire process will have continuous scientific monitoring to evaluate the evolution of the ecosystem and adapt restoration measures when necessary.

The performance also includes actions aimed at public use and dissemination, including interpretive trails, educational programs, and awareness-raising activities aimed at bringing knowledge of the wetland closer to the local and visiting population.

The initial hydrogeological studies of the LIFE Ballesteros Lagoons Project reveal that the karst aquifer overlying gypsum is in a better state of conservation than estimated, opening a more optimistic outlook for the restoration work planned until 2029.

[18
post-458","noticia","type-noticia","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tipo-de-noticia-proyecto
["GET
